Where Is Plainedge? Plainedge is one of the few communities on Long Island that does not exist as far as the postal service is concerned. Though Plainedge School District dates to the early 1800s and there is a Plainedge Library for more than three decades, it still does not have a post office, fire department, or designation as its own town. Plainedge is encompassed by the edge of various towns and zip codes that cover Bethpage, Massapequa, Seaford and Farmingdale.

Students attending Plainedge usually reside in those towns.

Plainedge Beginnings: Plainedge is located at the edge of the former Hempstead Plains, a vast prairie left behind in central Nassau County after the glaciers retreated. Areas of Plainedge were bought over time from 1688 to 1699 from the Marsapeque Indians by English settlers Thomas Powell and William Frost. The land was used mostly as pasture for cattle at first, and later, as hay farms in the 1800s. In the mid-1800s, thousands of turkeys covered the fields and became profitable.

The last remaining Turkey farming was done up until a few years back by Zorns Poultry Farm on Hempstead Tpk in Bethpage. They now are a takeout restaurant, but do not raise birds.

Farmers began planting cabbage for sauerkraut and cucumbers for pickles near the end of the 1800s. In the early 1900s because of blight those crops were abandoned. Potatos were then grown successfully until a similar blight in the 1940s.

Real Estate: The potato crop concerns for farmers in the Plainedge area, gave way to the Nassau County NY real estate boom. World War II servicemen returned and needed houses and shopping centers. There were more than 6,000 homes in Plainedge in 1960.
